ABOUT TIOF

ADVOCATING FOR
DATA-CENTRIC DIGITAL RIGHTS

The IO Foundation (TIOF) is a tech NGO born from a fundamental concern on the state of Digital Rights in the world.

Through our initiatives, we aim to raise awareness on the importance of Data-Centric Digital Rights, support devs in embracing their role as NextGen Rights Defenders and promote the creation of a Universal Declaration of Digital Rights with the collaboration of key stakeholders.

At TIOF we believe in accountable, transparent and responsible service to society in accordance with our policies and Code of Conduct.

We build our advocacy around 3 values:

Community - Accountability - Impact

UDDR

UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF DIGITAL RIGHTS

Building digital societies that observe and implement citizens’ Rights by design.

The UDDR is designed around 3 elements:

The Legal Document (L), a legal definition of the UDDR and the different list of DHs to be avoided and DRs to be observed.

The Technical Document (T), a technical guideline of the taxonomy of DRs to be implemented by the UDDR.

The Digital Rights SDK (DR SDK), an open source library an abstraction layer to transparently observe citizen's Rights.

For technologists to adopt a Rights-protecting paradigm, they need to be able to technically describe:

  • the Digital Harms they will want to avoid
  • the Digital Rights they wish to observe
  • These taxonomies are crucial to articulate Rights in technology.

The correct observance of the adoption and observance of the UDDR will require public and accessible metrics.

Comparable to the Human Rights Impact Assessment methodology, the Digital Rights SDK aims to provide a Digital Rights Impact Assessment accessible via a global registry.
